Rylie’s First Food

Last week Rylie we started introducing solid food to Rylie. It has been so much fun to watch her explore food!

Her first meal was a burrito. Ha! Not really, but we had burritos, she had avocado and black beans. Here’s her first taste. It’s especially funny at about 7 seconds in.

And some more shots:

We have decided to skip the puree stage and move right into table food. I have been reading a very interesting book, Baby-Led Weaning: The Essential Guide to Introducing Solid Foods and Helping Your Baby to Grow Up a Happy and Confident Eater. I am very passionate about food, and this book makes so much sense to me in regards to baby’s first foods.

Basically, baby-led weaning is letting your baby feed herself the healthy food you are already eating. According to the theory, baby-led weaning:

  • allows babies to explore taste, texture, colour and smell
  • encourages independence and confidence
  • helps to develop their hand-eye coordination and chewing skills
  • makes picky eating and mealtime battles less likely

Here’s a brochure (pdf) that gives a few more details.

We’re a week in, and although Rylie hasn’t actually gotten much food in her mouth, that’s ok, because her main source of nutrition until she is a year old should be breastmilk. Sure, it’s messy to let a 6 month old feed herself, but I love the idea of her controlling what and how much she eats. I hope it will help her to learn healthy eating habits as well as build her independence. A bonus is that it encourages us to eat healthier as well!
