Ironman 70.3 Boulder

The reason for our vacation was Steve’s participation in the Ironman 70.3 in Boulder. Steve has really gotten into triathlons in the last couple of years, and decided to try a half Ironman this summer. His training has been pretty intensive, including some weekend workouts lasting around five hours! It all paid off, though, when he crossed the finish line in Boulder.

Rylie is Dad’s #1 fan!

Getting ready for the 1.2 mile swim.

Hundreds of supporters enjoyed sunrise on the beach at Boulder Reservoir.

Athletes prepare for the race in the transition area. About 1,350 people participated in the race.

Steve’s heat begins the race! He was very happy with his swim performance.

Still smiling at the start of the 56 mile bike ride.

Rylie and I spent a lot of time hanging out in the shade and in the air conditioned car.

Jim & Linda were awesome, supporting both Margie and Steve with signs!

Steve’s still looking strong at the beginning of the 13.1 mile run.

I’m not sure if this should be referred to as bravery or idiocy… Yow.

Steve crossed the finish line after 7 hours and 19 minutes with the temperature at 98 degrees. Those who had done the race in the past said it was the worst race conditions they could remember. I’m so proud of him for reaching his goal of completing the race! It’s something I’m not sure I could ever do.

Afterwards, Steve was quick to say he was glad it was over and never planned to do it again (he’s starting to come around :)) His extreme sunburn seemed to overshadow the muscle pain. Apparently “sport” sunscreen constricts pores and is not recommended during an extended workout to ensure the body does not overheat. Who knew?!

After the race, we wrapped things up in Boulder and headed to Glenwood Springs, CO where we arrived with a bang, literally. More on that next time. 🙂

Very impressive! Nice job Steve and also amazed at how much travel you’ve done with Riley! Inspiring!
